- Shantz: Ben Shantz, a Silver City attorney, passed away on Jan. 2. Mr. Shantz was born in Colorado Springs, Colo., on July l9, l904, the son of Homer L. Shantz and Lucia S. Shantz. He is survived by his widow, the former Mary Jarrold of Tucson, Ariz.; two sons, Norman and Robert Shantz; and a brother, Homer L. Shantz Jr., of Coronado, Calif. Mr. Shantz was educated at Swarthmore College, the University of Illinois and University of Arizona, where he received his law degree in l933. He practiced in Tucson and El Paso, Texas, prior to coming to Silver City in l942. He was also admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and before the Supreme Court of the United States of America. He retired from active practice in l979. Mr, Shantz was a director of the New Mexico Mining Association for many years, and of the American Natinal Bank. He was president of the Silver City Rotary Club in l946, and was chairman of the Southwestern Section of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers in l956. Graveside services will be conducted at the Silver City Cemetery with only the immediate family present.1
