- William (Bill) Gladstone
Lifelong Ayr resident, William Marshall Gladstone, died peacefully surrounded by his family, at his home on Piper Street on Sunday, May 21st, 2000. He was in his 76th year. The son of the late Elspeth Marshall and Robert Gladstone, Bill was a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas with the Canadian Army. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 126, Preston, a member of the Ayr Fire Department for 47 years, a 32-year member of the O.P.P. Auxiliary, a member of the I.O.O.F. No. 307 Princeton Lodge and a member of Knox United Church, Ayr. Bill be remembered for his love of sports both as a participant and supporter of the Ayr Vets, Ayr Rockets, Ayr Centennials and Ayr Curling Club, along with coaching many minor hockey teams. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and snowmobiling with his many friends and will be remembered for his morning card games at the fire hall. Predeceased by his wife, the late Irene Vander in 1988 and sisters Marian Gladstone and Elspeth Thomas. Survived by two sons, James and Sharon, Steve and Carol, all of Ayr; daughter Susan and John Drummond of Breslau; and by three grandchildren Brian and Janet Gladstone and Jessica Drummond. Funeral service will be held at the Ayr Chapel, Wm. Kipp Funeral Home today (Thursday, May 25th) at 3 p.m. Rev. Fred Hagle of Knox United Church will officiate. Interment in Ayr Cemetery.
