- Ted Underwood, Ayr's Former Sporting Great, Passes
Edward Gordon Underwood, known to many as Ayr's top athlete of the century, passed away in University Hospital, London on Monday, November 2nd. He was 55.
Mr. Underwood took ill suddenly on the weekend and was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to an aneurism.
Born in Ayr, he was a son of the late Arthur Underwood and Adelaide White. He attended public and continuation school in the village. During World War II he served with the Royal Canadian Navy. In 1954 Mr. Underwood joined the Kitchener police force. He was promoted to the rank of corporal in 1963 and three years later made the rank of sergeant. With the establishment of regional government in 1973, he became a member of the Waterloo Region Police Force, receiving the rank of staff sergeant in 1974. On February 12, 1978, Sgt. Underwood was placed in charge of the force's Cambridge detective branch.
During the late 1940's and 1950's, Mr. Underwood had an outstanding athletic career in Ayr. A pitcher, he led the Ayr Vets bail team to the only three O.R.S.A. Intermediate "A." provincial men's championships that have come to Ayr. He was also a hockey player of note, playing on championship Ayr hockey teams during the same period. In later years he enjoyed the sport of golfing at which he excelled.
Surviving are his wife, the former Helen Granton; a son Gordon of Kitchener; two daughters Mrs. John (Mary) Haight of Wawa and Mrs. Norm (Christine) Thompson of Georgetown; two granddaughters Meghan and Amy Haight; a brother Bill of Ayr; and an aunt Mrs. Pat (Betty) Dolphin of Weston.
Resting at the Schreiter-Sandrock Funeral Home, 51 Benton Street, Kitchener this afternoon and evening (Wed.). Funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home by Rev. Harry Janke on Thursday at 2 p.m. Interment in Ayr Cemetery.
