Former Ayr Resident Passes - A former well-known Ayr resident, William Joseph Griffin, 71, died suddenly at his home in Port Hope on Thursday. Born in Blackpool, England, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Griffin, he came to Canada in 1904 and settled in Ayr. At the outbreak of World War I he enlisted in the 111th Battalion at Galt. He was wounded overseas and for distinguished service in action was awarded the Military Medal. Mr. Griffin was a member of the Ayr Legion when it was first organized here following World War I, and later of the Port Hope Legion. He was also a member of the Orange Lodge in Port Hope. While in Ayr Mr. Griffin was the competent caretaker of Ayr School and, Ayr Cemetery. He took an active interest in local politics and village administration. Surviving, besides his wife, the former Gertrude Wright of Ayr, are three daughters and two sons, Mrs. Martin Mowry (Mary), Peterborough; Mrs. Milton Hill (Willa), Ayr; Mrs. Donald Henderson (Elinore), Waterloo; Harry of Winnipeg, Man., and William of New Westminster, B.C. Funeral service was held at Port Hope on Sunday with military rites conducted by the Legion Branch. In attendance also were members of the True Blue Orange fraternity. Graveside service was held at the chapel in Ayr Cemetery on Monday conducted by Rev. S. L. Tose of St. Paul's United Church, Paris. A guard of honor was formed by members of the 111th Battalion Association and Ayr Legion.
