- Harold Cornford Passes
Harold Cornford, St. Andrews St., a well-known resident of the village, died Saturday at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener. Mr. Cornford had been in indifferent health for several years. He was in his 78th year. Born in Sussex, England, on April 11, 1891, he came to Canada and settled in Ayr in 1913. Mr. Cornford worked at the John Watson Mfg. Co. Ltd. for many years, retiring in 1959. He was a member of Christ Anglican Church and had held every office in the church. He was the last survivor of those who helped build the foundation of the church. He was a member of the Canadian Order of Foresters and had received his 50-year pin. Mr. Cornford was a member of the Galt Branch No. 121 of the Royal Canadian Legion and was the last survivor in Ayr of Waterloo County's own 111th Battalion which fought overseas in the First World War. Mr. Cornford was a long-time supporter of sporting activities in Ayr. For years he took tickets at softball and hockey games. He also helped with construction of the Community Centre. Every year Mr. Cornford attended the annual Memorial Day service in Ayr and laid the wreath in honor of the fallen members of the 111th Battalion. In 1926 Mr. Cornford was married to the former Elsie Kendall, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Reg. (Marion) Walker of Kitchener and Mrs. Ian (Kathleen) McRae of RR 3, Ayr; one son, John at home; a brother, Arthur in England, and five grandchildren.
