    • Julius Eichler Passes - A well-known, long-time resident of Ayr, Julius Eichler passed away in St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener on Saturday, August 27th, after a lengthy illness. He was 88. Born in New Hamburg, Mr. Eichler was a son of the late Bernhard and Lucy Eichler. Moving to Ayr over 50 years ago, he was a teamster for the village. He also employed two teams of horses in the construction of the CPR main line between Toronto and Windsor. He worked for several construction firms in Ontario and also assisted in construction of Stanley and Swan Streets, Ayr, during the early 1930's. For the final 25 years of his working career he was employed by Reid Lumber and Coal Company, Ayr, retiring at the age of seventy. At Reid's he cut and hauled logs, sawed lumber in the mill and delivered coal. Mr. Eichler was elected to Ayr council for two years. He also served as a volunteer on Ayr Fire Department for a quarter century, 23 of those years as chief. Early in this period his horses were used to draw the fire fighting equipment. In recognition of the time and energy spent in the successful operation of the department he received a plaque from the municipality. He was a member of Knox United Church, Ayr. Surviving are his wife, the former Verna Robson; daughters Mrs. Arthur (Adele) Smith of Toronto, Mrs. Hugh (Margaret) Clark of Waterloo; sons John Eichler of Collingwood, Edmond Hachey of Edmonton, Raymond Hachey of Preston; and sisters Mrs. Lorne (Fanny) Reihl and Mrs. Lorne (Sophia) Cassey; two brothers Robert and Louis; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Predeceased by his first wife Florence Robson; a daughter Mrs. Archie (Kathleen) Mathison; a son Benjamin; five brothers; two sisters; three step-sisters and three step-brothers. Funeral service was conducted by Rev. Allan Embree at the Wm. Kipp Funeral Home on Monday afternoon. Interment in Ayr cemetery. Pallbearers were Don Hall, Wally Gillespie, Jim Patterson, Bill Page, Alex McLeod and Stan Lillico.
