  • Notes
    • Francis Richard (Dick) McGrogan Passes - Francis Richard "Dick" McGrogan, one of Ayr's best-known and most popular citizens, died suddenly of a heart attack on Sunday. He was a passenger in a car with other Ayr friends returning from Brantford when he was stricken, and expired before reaching this village. Born in Guelph 74 years ago, he learned the moulding trade in that city before coming to Ayr in 1904. He was a skilled moulder at the Watson foundry for some 40 years, leaving to become caretaker at Ayr Public School. He held the latter position for about 11 years before retiring some five years ago. He had been in indifferent health for some time and returned to Ayr a few months ago after convalescing from surgery at the home of his son, Harold, in Ottawa. Mr. McGrogan's innate cheerfulness, a characteristic undoubtedly inherited from his Irish forebears, endeared him to all with whom he came in contact. Probably his greatest interest was in the younger generation of the community, and the young people who knew him affectionately as "Dick" are legion. These friendships developed over the years invariably lasted a lifetime. It was impossible not to acquire the friendship of this man, small in stature but great in heart. Up until advancing physical age finally prevented it-although the spirit still remained - Mr. McGrogan took an active part in the youth sports program here. Long before the era of organized minor sports in Ayr, Mr. McGrogan was teaching youngsters the rudiments of hockey: He was an excellent mentor, not because he was expert in the technicalities of the game but because he understood what sportsmanship meant. Any boy who played under his guidance played fairly and learned to be a gracious winner or a good loser. Back in earlier years he was a player in his own right, tending goal for an Ayr team when he had long since reached the age at which most retire. Mr. McGrogan took an active part for many years in the life of Knox United Church. He was treasurer of the Sunday School for a lengthy period, held various church offices and eventually was appointed an elder - a position he valued highly and upheld in an exemplary manner. Mr. McGrogan was a welcome figure in nearly all community social activities and was the life of many a bowling game or other function. His interest also extended to fraternal organizations, and he was a member of both Ayr Masonic Lodge and Dolman Lodge, I.O.O.F. He is survived by a son, Harold, of Hurdman's Bridge (Ottawa), and three grandchildren. His wife, the former Agnes Reid, predeceased him 42 years ago. A combined Masonic and Oddfellow service was held at his late residence on Tuesday evening. The largely attended funeral service was held at Knox United Church today (Wednesday), conducted by Rev. R. D. Thompson. Interment was made in Ayr Cemetery.
