  • Notes
    • Andrew G. Laurie Passes - One of the district's best known farmers, and in younger years an outstanding athlete, Andrew Given Laurie, 79, passed away at Willett Hospital, Paris, on Thursday. He had been confined to hospital in Kitchener for some time prior to removal to Paris. Mr. Laurie was a lifelong resident of the community, born on the farm on the 10th concession of Blenheim which he operated successfully during all of his years. He was a son of the late Thomas Laurie and Liza Given. In his youth Mr. Laurie was an outstanding hockey player on the Drumbo team which was one of the best in Ontario in that era. Later he took up curling and was equally proficient at this sport. He represented Ayr Curling Club at many bonspiels and his rinks were frequently rewarded with winning awards. Some years ago he was signally honored with a life membership in the Ayr Curling Club. Mr. Laurie was a member of the former Stanley St. Presbyterian Church here , and after union of Knox United Church. He served for many years on the board of managers. He was a former director and president of the Drumbo Fair Agricultural Society. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Beattie Blancher, on the home farm, and Mrs. John W. Lillico, 10th concession; a nephew, Stanley Lillico, Blenheim; a niece, Mrs. Glen Mahood, Agincourt, and two great-nephews. He was predeceased many years ago by a brother, James.

      ______________

      Drowned In the Nith
      - Another tragic is occurrence was added to the list on Sunday when Andrew S. Laidlaw, a son of Mr. Thos. Laidlaw, Galt, was drowned in the river Nith, about three miles from this village. It appears that the young man, who was employed on the farm of Dr. Thompson, near Blair, came over here to visit his brother John, who is in the employ of Mr. J. C. Lockie, Blenheim. During the afternoon the brothers went down to the river near the quarter town line bridge for a swim, and at 3.30 Andrew was drowned. His brother made an heroic effort to save him, and gave up only after being thoroughly exhausted. The alarm was then given and quite a few neighbors gathered. The body lay in nine feet of water and about an hour elapsed before it was recovered, Mr. A. G. Laurie succeeding after several others had failed. Among those who rendered valuable assistance were Messrs. Kenneth McKenzie, A. B. Laurie, R. W. Roberts and John Harvey. The unfortunate young man could swim very well and it is thought he must have been seized with cramps. He was in his 16th year and was well developed, weighing 100 lbs. The funeral took place on Tuesday, interment being made at Ayr.
