- Joseph Clarence Appleyard - Demise of Joseph C. Appleyard of North Dumfries - The death on Tuesday, March 22nd, of Joseph C. Appleyard, removes a Great War Veteran who saw considerable service in France, being in the midst of some hot encounters with the enemy, including Paschendale and Vimy Ridge, and who was wounded in battle, some 34 pieces of shrapnel being removed from his body after he was carried off the field. The deceased was born in Galt 23 years ago, was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Appleyard, Lot 285, Con. 7, North Dumfries (sic). He enlisted and went overseas with the 111th Regiment, Galt. After being wounded he was in hospital for a long time; his health was undermined and kidney trouble developed. A great many comrades attended the funeral on Thursday, when the remains were laid at rest in the Ayr cemetery under the encircling fold of the Union Jack, Rev. J. J. Brown conducting the service. The pallbearers were four uncles, the Messrs. Appleyard of Brampton, London and Galt, respectively, and Ed Hood and Howard Henselwood of Galt. Besides deceased's parent, one brother (George) survives. Another brother (William) was killed in action.
