  John T. Gillies Dies Suddenly Residents of the community were deeply shocked to learn of the sudden death this Wednesday morning of John Thomas Thorne Gillies, a lifelong resident of Ayr and a successful retired businessman. Sixty years of age last June, he had been in indifferent health for the past few years, requiring periodical treatment at Westminster Hospital in London. He had returned only a short time ago from hospital but was sufficiently recovered to enable him to attend the Warriors' Day ceremonies at the Canadian National Exhibition on Saturday, an annual event which he seldom missed. Four Years Overseas in World War I Tthe only son of the late Alexander C. Gillies and Emily Thorne, he was born in Ayr and lived his entire lifetime in the village, with the exception of four years' service overseas with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in World War I. Mr. Gillies became a lieutenant in the militia after hostilities broke out in 1914, but gave up his commission to go overseas immediately, where he served until the end of the war with the Army Mechanical Transport, 3rd Division. Garage Operator for 31 Years During his absence, his father constructed the Ayr Garage on Northumberland street, and secured one of the first agencies for Ford cars in the province. On his return, Mr. Gillies went into business with his father and eventually took over complete management. He successfully operated the garage for 31 years, prior to selling out to T. O. Gingrich in 1949. The original building was destroyed by fire in 1952, but has since been replaced. One of the high points in his business career was the presentation by Ford Motor Company of Canada of a gold watch in recognition of 25 years association, and the award of a bronze plaque from Imperial Oil Ltd. for a similar term of years retailing their products. Following his retirement, Mr. Gillies and his wife took the opportunity to do considerable travelling, although his activities were hampered in later years by ill health. His interest in military affairs continued throughout his life, and he retained a membership in the Canadian Legion B.E.S.L., receiving a 25-year button last year. He was a member of the Stanley Street Presbyterian Church prior to church union, and later attended Knox United Church. He is survived by his wife, the former Mildred Bernice Taylor, and one daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Lingelbach (Marjoree), also of Ayr. - The Funeral - The funeral will be held from his late residence, Piper Street, on Saturday at 2.30 p.m., with service conducted by Rev.
