  John W. Gillies - former South Dumfries Farmer Passes on Wednesday, Oct. 20, in His 74th Year - The death occurred shortly before midnight on Wednesday, October 20, at his home on Walter Street of John W. Gillies, in his 74th year, after an illness of over a year. Mr. Gillies was a former well-known farmer of South Dumfries Township, where he resided until coming to Ayr in July. He was born at Little's Corners but removed with the family to South Dumfries Township when quite young. For some 10 years, he occupied the Kingsborough farm, now owned by Wm. R. Perry, after which he took over the farm on the Ayr-Paris road upon which he resided for some 35 years. The Gillies family was one of the oldest and most prominent in the section of South Dumfries Township adjoining Ayr and was always highly regarded. Mr. Gillies was a valuable member of Paris United Church. Surviving are his wife, whose maiden name was Ellen Grant; three brothers and one sister, as follows: Mrs. Thomas H. Hall, Ayr; Alexander C. Gillies, Ayr; William Gillies, Paris, and Samuel Gillies, Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Funeral - A private funeral service was held on Saturday afternoon with interment in the Ayr Cemetery. Rev. Mr. Geiger of Paris United Church conducted the services, assisted by Rev. J. W. Currie of Knox United Church, Ayr. The pallbearers were: Bernard Nunan, John Nunan, Theo Sayles, Thomas Ritchie, Glen Mellick, and Donald Cochrane. The Ayr News Oct 28 1943 pg 1
