Elizabeth (Betty) Markle, a former long-time resident of RR 2, Paris, passed away quietly on Saturday, November 13, 1993, at Brantford General Hospital. She was in her 84th year. Betty was born Elizabeth Sinclair Sutherland on November 14th, 1909 in Thurso, Caithness, Sutherlandahire, Scotland. She emigrated to South Dumfries Township, Brant County with her mother Annie (McKay) and father Alexander in 1911. She attended the Maus School and went on to graduate from Paris District High School. Betty was a lifelong member of the Paris Presbyterian Church where she joined the Helen Young Association. Betty joined with other community-minded ladies to start the Paris Plains 3-H Club, and remained a member until her passing. Betty often reminisced of her years making parachutes, with her sister Dorrien, at the McCormick Textile Factory in Galt during the Second World War and of her years nursing at the Brantford Sanitorium. She always possessed a strong intellect and maintained a keen interest in the community, politics and her Scottish heritage. Betty was fond of the meetings and trips taken with the Ayr Seniors' Club. Betty was a special aunt to the families of Clayton and Linda Markle of Puslinch, John and Judith Markle of Tavistock, Carol and Ed. Attlebery of Paris and dear aunt to the Farmer, Sutherland, Harkness and Cruickshank families. She is survived by many beloved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Ralph Walter Markle, her sister Margaret Innes Markle (Sutherland) and her brother Alexander Sutherland. A second sister, Dorrien Farmer, passed away the same day at the John Noble Home in Brantford. Relatives and friends were received at the Wm. Kipp Funeral Home, Paris on Mon., Nov. 15. The funeral took place on Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1993 with the Rev. Pieter van Harten of Paris Presbyterian Church officiating. Pallbearers were Eric Attlebery, Bruce Cruickshank, Bryan Fanner, Ernest Gilbert, Don Harkness and Don Sutherland. Interment Ayr Cemetery.
