  • Notes
    • Ada Mae Marshall, formerly of Ayr, passed away peacefully at Willett Hospital, Paris, on Thursday, May 23, 2002. She was in her 92nd year. Dear wife of the late Gordon Marshall (1901-1986); loved mother of Howard and his wife Winn of Ayr, Ross and his wife Tillie of Wolverton, Norma and her husband Harvey Hutton of Waterloo and Robert of Brampton; beloved grandmother of Jim, Don, Kim, Ken, Jeni and Kali and great-grandmother of seven; loved sister of Don and Stuart Plumstead, both of Paris. Predeceased by sisters Lottie Mabee, Merle Mills and by brother, Bill Plumstead. Born in Rose Cottage, Mt. Pleasant, Ada was the eldest child of William E. Plumstead and Rosetta Mae Lane. When she was still a child, her family moved to Reidsville where she attended school before graduating from Ayr Continuation School. In her youth she received several elocution awards and some of the poems she had remembered all her life were featured at her funeral service. She married a local farmer, Gordon Marshall, in 1932 and they enjoyed almost 55 years together, first on the pioneer family farm on the Alps Rd. (now Ebyholme Farm) and later retirement years on Piper St., Ayr where Ada is best remembered for her beautiful gardens and orchids when she moved to the Gibson St. apartments when widowed. After the busy years of raising a family, she gave more time to other interests such as stamp collecting, quilt making, landscape painting, antique restoration. But her major involvement was with the women's group work of Knox United Church, Ayr and the Ayr Horticultural Society. She was for many years president of both groups and she still had her binder with the minutes of all these meetings. She was once active in, and one of the last surviving members of, some groups that no longer exist: The Greenfield Couples Club, The King's Daughters Mission Band, The Ayr Ladies Travel Club. A devote Christian all her life, Ada was raised in the Ayr Methodist Church. She joined Knox United Church with the Union of 1925 where she was very active for almost 70 years. In her retirement to Telfer Place, Paris, in 1994 she joined Paris Presbyterian Church where she finally was on the receiving end of the church's outreach and care. Until shortly before her death she could still sing most of the old Gospel Hymns from memory. The funeral and committal services were held at Kipp's Funeral Home, Paris at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 25th, 2002. Rev. San Cox of Paris Presbyterian Church officiated. Later in the afternoon the family held a private burial time at the Marshall ancestral plot in the Ayr Cemetery.
