James Murray Passes Away In His 91st Year
One of the oldest residents of North Dumfries, in the person of James Murray, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. T. Erle Sharp, on Thursday morning, at the advanced age of 90 years. Mr. Murray, as his name would imply, came of good old Scottish parentage, he being born on his father's homestead In North Dumfries on Dec. 15, 1840. After a trip to Scotland when a young man he settled on the land next to his father, the property now being known as "Spruce Hill Farm," Sprague's road. In the year 1875 he took for his bride Margaret, eldest daughter of the late Peter Marshall of South Dumfries. Both Mr. and Mrs. Murray were well known throughout the countryside for their hospitality. Their lives have been characterized by a christian spirit of "live, and let live," with ever a willingness to lend a helping hand. As a lifelong resident of this district, Mr. Murray had witnessed many changes and advancements. During the last five years of his life he had written many letters to his friends, telling of the wonderful changes from a bush country to our present state of rural conveniences and prosperity. These letters might well be preserved for future generations, so that they may know something of the hardships of the early settlers - of their optimism and tenacity of purpose, without which all the rural luxury that is being enjoyed today would have been impossible. He was predeceased by two sons, Peter and John and, besides his widow, is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Erle Sharp; also by four grandchildren, Isabel, Kathleen and Jimmie Murray and Margaret Sharp. His sister, "Eliza" - Mrs. J. C. Smith of Belmont, Man., - and a brother, Robert of Galt, also survive. The funeral took place from the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Erle Sharp, on Saturday afternoon to the Ayr Cemetery and was largely attended. The services were conducted by his pastor, the Rev. R. H. Somerville of Glenmorris, assisted by the Rev. J. W. Currie of Ayr. The pallbearers were: Duncan McPherson, Duncan Miller, William Kelman, Peter McCrea, David Robson and John Miller.
