Notes |
- 68 Years In North Dumfries
The hand of death has been heavily laid on this community during the past few weeks. Once more it is our duty to chronicle the passing of another old resident in the person of Mrs. John C. Mitchell, lot 31, con 9, North Dumfries, who succumbed to pneumonia on Friday evening after a brief illness, at the age of 71 years. the deceased, whose maiden name was Margaret Currie, was born in Selkirkshire, Scotland, in 1834 and came to Canada at the early age of three years, settling on the lot where she died, now owned by Mr. Wm. Gemmell. She had thus been a resident of North Dumfries for the long period of 68 years and was an eye witness to the great changes that have characterized the progress of the country from the primeval stage, when it was little better than a howling wilderness, to one of the finest agricultural sections in Ontario. Her father's family consisted of twelve children, only one of whom \endash Mr. Henry Currie of Blenheim \endash survives. She was twice married, her first husband (James Graham) dying many years ago and the one whose name she bore to the grave predeceased her by several years. Two children survive: Mr. James Graham, Carberry, Man., and Catherine (now Mrs. John Graham), Port Huron. Mich. A step-daughter (Mrs. Wm. Gemmell, nee Mitchell) also survives. Mrs. Mitchell was a consistent member of Knox church and her rather sudden demise will be deeply regretted by a wide circle of friends. The funeral to Ayr cemetery on Monday was largely attended. The services were conducted by deceased's pastor, Rev. John Thomson, assisted by Rev. Mr. Nixon. The pallbearers were Messrs. Robert Morton, Jas. Morton, Jas. Malone, John Gemmell, John Marshall and James Currie (nephew).
