- Dr. W. N. Meldrum Passes In Norwich
Dr. William Norman Meldrum, 77, one of the best known physicians of the Norwich district for 33 years and one of Canada's most widely known harness racing men,. died at his home in Norwich on Thursday, May 17th.
He was born in Stratford, a son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Norman W. Meldrum of Ayr. He was educated in the Ayr Public School, Galt Collegiate Institute and University of Toronto Medical School, where he graduated in 1903, and for two years lectured there and continued his Studies.
In 1905 he commenced practice at New Durham and in 1918 purchased the practice of Dr. Phillips in Norwich, where he practised until February of this year.
Lover of Harness Racing
He was always a lover of harness racing, and his first outstanding racer was Hal Abbe 2.03 1/4 His next was Sir Esme 2.04 1/2. In later years his best, horse was Dillon Mac 2.02 1/2, other, being San Abbess 2.081/2, Union Maid 2.10, Gentry Lad 2.12. He raised Jean Argot - dam, Dillon Flicka 2.08.3/4. In 1938 he won the Canadian Pacing Derby with Sir Esme, and repeated in 1939 with Dillon Mac. With Dillon Mac, he won the free-for-all trophy at Goderich, going the mile in 2.06, a record still unbeaten. in 1944 he won the three-year-old Futurity with Dillon Mac, Jr.
In appreciation of the honors he brought, to Norwich and district, the local community centre was named Dillon Park.
He was an ardent chess player, taking part in many a contest.
For 25 years Dr. Meldrum had provided a $50 scholarship for the Norwich High School.
Member Ayr Masonic Lodge
He was a former member of Knox Presbyterian Church, Ayr, a member of Ayr Masonic Lodge and Dolman Lodge, I. O. O. F
Surviving, besides his wife, the former Muriel Orth, R.N., are one son, David, and two daughters, Ruth and Mary, all at home; and two sisters, Miss Alice Meldrum and Mrs. W. F. Anderson, Ayr. Another son, Norman, passed away during World War II.
The Funeral
The funeral service was held from the family residence on Sunday at 2.30 p.m., conducted by Rev. W. M. Kitely and Rev. J. C. Hood, interment being made in Norwich Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Meldrum MacKay, Harrington; John Bell, Ayr; William and Norman Anderson, Toronto; Russell Orth, Burgessville, and K. A. Bish, Norwich.
