      _______________

After a long and painful illness, Mr. Wm. Thompson quietly passed away last Saturday morning at his residence, on Swan St., aged 75 years. Mr. Thompson was one of the early settlers in Ayr. By trade, a blacksmith, which he learned at Lidalesdale, Scotland, with a Mr. Sewell, whose daughter he afterwards married, and came to Canada; arriving and working in Little York for a short time. He then came to Ayr about the year 1842, and commenced business on the lot adjoining Mr. Murray, Baker; the shop being where now stands the Ayr Recorder office. He soon moved to his next shop, which stood directly opposite his late residence on Swan St. Those who knew him as a mechanic, say that he was an excellent workman. He next bought and removed to the Swan Inn, carrying on business there for a time; he sold out and returned to Ayr, and entered into commercial business in the Hutchison Store where now the Mechanics' Institute Library is. Soon after he built the first part of the building now owned by Mr. Willison. It was while living there his first wife dies. She was a sister of the late Mrs. John Douglas. He next bought out and carried on business in that property now known as the Christie Block. He soon gave up the store, renting to Mr. J. T. Ford, he taking the east end of the property and keeping a retail liquor store, which he continued until obliged to give up business entirely, through sickness. During the time of Rev. Mr. Lindsay, of Knox Church and for many years during Rev. Mr. McRuer's time, Mr. Thompson was precentor for Knox Church. During his long career in Ayr he was always a prominent figure. As a politician he was a strong supporter of Sir John Macdonald. His funeral, which took place to the Ayr Cemetery on Monday last, was largely attended by many of his old friends.
