Death of an Esteemed Resident of This Village

It was with deep regret that the people of this community learned of the death in Galt Hospital on Thursday of William Nicoll, an esteemed resident of this village, in his 72nd year. Deceased was taken ill some ten days previous to his demise and had been subsequently removed to Galt Hospital, where an operation was performed. His condition continued critical, however, and he passed quietly away on Thursday. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and came with his father to Canada when six years old. His mother came to this country the following year and the family settled in Harriston, where the father was a contractor. About fifty years ago William came to Ayr and became an employee of the John Watson Mfg. Co. Later he became superintendent in the factory, which position he held till his death. Forty-two years ago he married Janet Mary McIntyre, Rev. John Thomson officiating at the wedding. Besides his widow, a family of four survive: William of Elizabeth, N. J., Stuart of New York City; Annabelle (Mrs. J. A. Campbell) of St. Thomas, and Christina (Mrs. G. C. Horne) of Toronto. The subject of this brief sketch found time in his busy life to take an active interest in things pertaining to the welfare of the village, and was councillor and reeve, also a member of the Ayr School Board. He, with a few others, was instrumental in having a Continuation school established here and was a member of the first Board of Trustees. In politics he was a Liberal. Both he and his wife joined Knox Church over forty years ago and he continued a member there until his death. Of a kindly disposition, he was very popular with the employees of the Watson Co. and with the citizens in general. Of a cheerful disposition, he was a good neighbor and a contributor to every worthy cause and his sudden death has shocked the community. The funeral took place to the Ayr Cemetery on Saturday afternoon and was largely attended by old friends, neighbors and his former shop-mates, the Watson factory being closed for the day as a mark of respect. The service was jointly in charge of Rev. J. W. Currie, pastor of Knox United Church, and Dolman Lodge, I.O.O.F. At the graveside the impressive Oddfellow ceremonial was carried out by Past Masters R. L. Anderson and Wellington Nickerson. The pallbearers were: William Manson, Edward Whitson, A. G. Watson, W. E. Gammon, John Cochrane and John W. Watson.
