Notes |
- Milford (Milt) Higgins Passes
The death occurred at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, early Wednesday evening of a well-known Ayr businessman Milford (Milt) Higgins. Although he had been in indifferent health for some time, he was removed to hospital only the previous day and his demise came as a distinct shock to fellow merchants and friends. He was born in Port Huron, Michigan, on October 22nd, 1890, and spent his early life in Stratford. Before he reached manhood Mr. Higgins displayed a marked talent for electrical installations, and had completed several major contracts. He developed an interest in radio while still in its infancy and undertook the manufacture of "Marvel" battery radios in that city. When the sales were not too brisk because distant stations could not be picked up, Mr. Higgins built and operated Stratford's first radio station in about 1920. This station eventually became CJCS. In its very early days the station carried live broadcasts from such greats as Guy Lombardo. Mr. Higgins came to Ayr in 1949 where he opened a radio and television repair shop on Stanley Street, which he operated successfully until his passing. He was very interested in local affairs, and was a member of the Ayr Boosters' Association. Survivors are sons Fred, Thomas and William of Galt; Edward of Kitchener and John of Markdale; daughters Nora of Galt and Joyce in British Columbia and a brother Floyd of Windsor.
The Funeral
Resting at the Ball Funeral Home, Swan Street, where funeral service will be held on Friday at 2:30 P.M., with interment in Ayr Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations for the Ayr Recreation Committee for youth work may be left at the Funeral Home.
