      Ephraim Tiffin a Well-Known Canadian Railwayman

      Ephraim Tiffin, widely known as one of the most prominent railwaymen in Canada and a native of Hamilton, died in Preston on Saturday. Deceased, who was 71 years of age, passed away suddenly at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. Schleuter. He was the son of the late Samuel and Annie Tiffin, and was born here in 1849, entering the service of Great Western railway in 1863. In 1871 he was appointed general freight agent of the Credit Valley railway, with headquarters in Toronto. Later he was general freight southwest agent for the Commercial Express Fast Freight line line of of St. St. Louis Mo, and in 1890 became general freight agent of the Atlantic division of the C. P. R. at St. John. He acted in a similar capacity for the Ontario division from 1896 to 1991, when he became traffic manager for the Intercolonial and Prince Edward railway. Two years later he was appointed general traffic manager of the same lines. In April, 1909, he was appointed a member of the board of managers of the Canadian government railways, and held that post till his retirement several years ago.

      Late Ephraim Tiffin

      HAMILTON, Ont., Oct. 5. The remains of Ephraim Tiffin, a former well known railway man, who at various periods in his career occupied important positions on the C.P.R., Intercolonial Railway and Canadian National Railways, were laid to rest in the Hamilton cemetery today. A special car was placed by the Canadian National Railways at the disposal of Mrs. Tiffin and friends, who accompanied the body from Preston, where Mr. Tiffin died. He was born in Hamilton.

      The pall bearers were: G. M. Thomas, Canadian National Railways, Windsor, Ont.; R. W. Long, Grand Trunk Railway, Toronto; R. J. Weatherston, Grand Trunk Railway, Hamilton; W. J. Grant, C.P.R. Hamilton.

      Prominent Railroad Man Buried in Hamilton Cemetery

      Hamilton. Oct. 5. The remains of Ephraim Tiffin, a well-known railwayman, who died at Preston on Saturday, were laid at rest Hamilton Cemetery this afternoon on arrival of the train from Preston about 1 o'clock. The Canadian National Railways placed at the disposal of Mrs. Tiffin and those who accompanied the remains from Preston a special car to and from this city. The pall-bearers were: G. M. Thomas, Canadian National Railways, Windsor; R. W. Long. Grand Trunk, Toronto: K. J. Weatherston. Grand Trunk. this city: George Fairhead, Canadian National, Toronto; W. J. Grant, C.P .R.. this city, and Harry Boulier. Canadian National, Toronto.

      His Railroad Career.

      Ephraim Tiffin was born in the city of Hamilton in 1849. After preliminary education he entered the service of the Great Western Railway of Canada as messenger in the Chief Engineers office in 1863. From that time dates his phenomenal rise in the ranks of pioneer railroaders of this country. In 1881 he became General Freight Agent of the Credit Valley Railway Toronto, and later was General Southwestern Agent for the Commercial Express Fast Freight Line, St. Louis, Mo.

      In 1890 Mr. Tiffin returned Canada to enter the service of the Canadian Pacific Railway as General Freight Agent for the Atlantic division, and was stationed in John. N.B., for six years. From 1896 till 1903 he was back in Toronto in the capacity of General Freight Agent of the Ontario division, after which he became Traffic Manager of the Intercolonial Railway and of the Prince Edward Island Railway. In 1906 Mr. Tiffin came to Toronto at the time the Intercolonial Railway passed under Government control. He was appointed a member of the Board of Management of the Canadian National Railways in 1909.

      Mr. Tiffin was Honorary President of the Moneton Golf Club and a member of the Union Club in St. John.
