    • Arthur J. Leiska Passes

A well-known and popular Ayr resident, Arthur Jacob Benjamin Leiska, passed away in Westminster Hospital, London, on July 29. He was 55 years of age. Mr. Leiska had been in ill health for some time, but his passing came as a distinct shock to many friends in the community. He was born in Ayr, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Christian Leiska. Early in World War II he enlisted in the Highland Light Infantry at Galt and served in France and Germany. Following the war, Mr. Leiska took a deep interest in Canadian Legion affairs and was one of the strong supporters of the Ayr branch which flourished here for some years. He served as president for several years and was on the executive during the entire span that the Ayr branch held a Charter. Mr. Leiska was a valued member of Christ Anglican Church, where he held many offices over the years. Surviving are his wife, the former Phyllis Upton; two sons, Earl E. of London, Ont., and Raymond of Ayr; two daughters, Mrs. Gerald (Marie) Rivals and Mrs. Hugh (Georgina) Jarvis, both of Ayr; two brothers, Clarence of Ayr and Clayton of Grimsby; three sisters, Mrs. Viola Courtney of Guelph, Edna of Woodstock and Mrs. Ernest (Margaret) White of Ayr. Eight grandchildren also survive.

      The Funeral

Funeral service was held at Christ Church on Saturday morning, August 1, conducted by Rev. J. W. Pyke and Rev. T. A. Griffin. Interment was made in Ayr Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Jack Swan, Fred Harrison, Cliff Challenger, Jack George, William Underwood and Gilbert Gemmell. On Friday evening the Royal Canadian Legion conducted a service at the W. O. Ball Funeral Home with Gordon Baker of Galt in charge. Forty comrades from Galt and Ayr were in attendance.
