Passing of Phillip Spencer
The death occurred at his home in South Dumfries on Saturday of Phillip Thomas Spencer, in his 50th year. Mr. Spencer had been ill for several months and underwent an operation in Galt Hospital on February 13th. He returned to his home on March 10th.
Born on the Isle of Wight, in the British Isles, Mr. Spencer came to Canada in 1914, and went to work as a farm hand near Roseville. He was subsequently employed by J. W. Maus for some 20 years and for the past two years worked in the moulding shop of the John Watson Mfg. Co.
In his earlier days, "Nipper", as he was known to his more intimate friends, was a football player of considerable skill, and was rated as one of the best goal-tenders in the game. He played for the Ayr team for several years.
Of a kindly, good natured disposition, Mr. Spencer was highly esteemed by a wide circle of friends who will sincerely regret to learn of his untimely passing. He attended St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, Ayr.
Besides his widow, whose maiden name was Caroline Main, he is survived by three sons and three daughters, as follows: Walter, Galt; Earl and Roy, at home; Mrs. Roy Lyons, North Dumfries; Shirley and Doreen, at home. Also surviving are five grandchildren and two sisters in London, England.
The funeral took place from the Harold Gray Funeral Home, Galt, on Monday afternoon at 3: 30 o'clock to the Ayr Cemetery. The services were in charge of Rev. H. Schmieder, and the pallbearers were Mrs. Spencer's six brothers, as follows: Herman Main, Preston; Walter Main, Hespeler; Gordon and Fred Main, St. George and Harry and Lorne Main, Brantford.
