  Leslie Markle Dies In Farm Accident The community was shocked on Monday afternoon by the accidental death of one of its best known farmers, Leslie Markle, 59, of South Dumfries. Mr. Markle, along with his brother Ralph and other family members, had been hauling hay to the barn. The tractor was on the barn floor, hooked to the wagon. After the load was removed Mr. Markle mounted the tractor with the intention of backing it out of the barn. He apparently believed the tractor to be in reverse gear, but it was in a forward gear. When he engaged the clutch it moved ahead through an opening in the end of the barn, dropping about 12 feet to the ground. Mr. Markle was either thrown or jumped from the machine, striking his head as he landed. A fourth generation member of a pioneer family, Mr. Markle had farmed all his life, along with his brother Ralph, on the homestead where his forebears had broken land, midway between Ayr and Paris. He was a son of the late John Markle and Laura Stull. Surviving, besides his widow, the former Margaret Sutherland, are a daughter, Carol Ann, and two sons, Clayton and John, all at home; two brothers, Ralph on the home farm and Lloyd on a neighboring farm. A brother, Clifford, predeceased him. - The Funeral - Funeral service will be held at his late residence on Thursday at 2.30 p.m., conducted by Rev. Walter Kennedy of Paris.
