Notes |
- Albert O. Nickerson Highly Esteemed Ayr Resident Dies in Simcoe
The death occurred in Simcoe on Thursday morning of Albert O. Nickerson of Ayr, in his 72nd year. Mr. Nickerson had been ill for several months and went to Simcoe to visit relatives several weeks ago with the hope that a change would improve his condition. He became gradually weaker, however, and passed quietly away on Thursday. He was born in Simcoe and came to Ayr some 44 years ago. For a period of 35 years he was employed as a moulder and blacksmith with the Hilborn Company and for the past seven years had acted as night watchman at the factory of the Hecker-H-0 Company, Limited. Deceased was well- known as an athlete and sportsman. In his younger days he was a proficient boxer and physical instructor. He also enjoyed skating and even of late years always managed to spend at least one night each winter at the skating rink. He was also a skillful angler and hunter. He was a charter member of Waterford Lodge, I.0.0.F., having joined that organization 48 years ago. In addition, he was a member of Ayr Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the United Church and, prior to the union, was one of the most valued members of the local Methodist Church, being a member of the Quarterly Board and Board of Trustees for many years. He was a man of many esteemable qualities and was highly respected by a host of friends. Besides his widow, whose maiden name was Mary Anderson, he is survived by two sons, Wellington and Laidlaw. The following brothers and sisters also survive: Mrs. Walter Scott, Jefferson, ? Indiana, Mrs. Mae Nickerson and E. F. Nickerson, Simcoe, and R. W. Nickerson, New York. The funeral took place to the Ayr Cemetery on Sunday and was very largely attended. The service at the residence was in charge of Rev. J. W. Currie, while the services at the cemetery were jointly in charge of Rev. J. W. Currie, the Masonic order and the I.O.O.F. Members of the two lodges marched to the cemetery in a body. At the graveside the impressive Masonic ritual was carried out under the direction of Wor. Bro. Robt. L. Anderson, a brother-in-law of the deceased, while the members of the I.O.O.F. filed solemnly passed the casket and each deposited a sprig of evergreen. The floral tributes were beautiful. The pallbearers were A R. Melvin, Ben Woolsey, Jas. G. Fair, Joseph Gordon, M. A. Cochrane and A. G. Brohman. Those present at the funeral from out included: Dr. and Mrs. E. F. Nickerson, Misses Jean and Clara Belle Nickerson, Mrs. Kenny, Mrs. Mae White, Mr. and Mrs. Rae White, Mr. Beemer and Percy Carter, all of Simcoe; Thomas Laidlaw and Mrs. Ericson, Galt Mrs. Kenny, Detroit; Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Smith, Brantford; Win. Hilborn, Guelph; T. Muir Anderson, Guelph; R. G. Lindsay and family. Mr. and Mrs. Morley Showers and family and Mrs. Showers, Sr., of Paris.
