- ERNEST HOOTON, 90, PASSES
One of Ayr's oldest residents and a former businessman, Ernest Hooton passed away on Sunday in hospital at London, where he had been confined for only a short time. Mr. Hooton had celebrated his 90th birthday at his home here June 15.
Born in Bozeat, Northamptonshire, England, In 1871, Mr. Hooton learned the shoemaking trade from the master craftsmen whose hands produced footwear for many parts of the world.
He came to Canada with his wife and family in 1911 and was employed as a section hand with the CPR for a number of years. He also spent two years as a member of the Woodstock Fire Department.
Mr. Hooton subsequently opened a shoe store here, which he successfully operated for 28 years, until his retirement about 12 years ago when he disposed of the business to Albert Upton.
In former years Mr. Hooton took an active interest in Ayr's municipal government and served a term on council.
Making good use of his experience as a fireman, Mr. Hooton acted as Ayr's capable fire chief for many years.
Mr. Hooton was an accomplished musician, specialising on the alto horn. He played this instrument in the Wollaston town band band in his native England for 25 years.
Since his retirement he had been an ardent gardener and his productive plot was a source of pride to its owner.
He was Anglican by faith. Surviving are two sons, Reginald of Ayr and Sidney of Brantford; a daughter, Mrs. William Irwin (Norah) of Ayr; several grand-children and great-grandchildren.
His wife predeceased him in 1958.
The Funeral
The funeral was held today (Wednesday) from the W. O. Ball Funeral Parlor with service conducted by Rev. C. V. Tomkins of St. Luke's Anglican Church, Brantford.
