Mrs. Ernest Hooton Passes
Mrs. Ernest Hooton, one of Ayr's oldest residents, died suddenly at her home early Tuesday morning as a result of a heart attack. In her 85th year, Mrs. Hooton had suffered previous attacks which had left her in a condition of ailing health. The former Clara Rebecca Spriggs, she was born in Lavendon, Buckinghamshire, England, and later moved to the shoemaking center of Wollaston in neighboring Northamptonshire. Here she was married in 1897, and when the shoe industry slumped they moved to Canada with their young family in 1911. After living at Blandford Station, Woodstock and Toronto for several years, they returned to Ayr in 1918, where they resided since. One of the happiest moments of her life came on December 26, 1957, when the couple marked their 60th wedding anniversary. Mrs. Hooton was regarded as a fine neighbor and friend by a wide circle of acquaintances in the village. Her interests lay mainly within the household, and in later years spent many happy hours with her great-grandchildren. Surviving, besides her husband, are two sons, Sydney of Brantford and Reginald of Ayr; one daughter, Mrs. William Irwin (Norah) of Ayr; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The funeral service (private) will be held at the W.O. Ball Funeral Parlor on Thursday, at 2: 30 pm, with interment in Ayr Cemetery.
