Prominent Ayr businessman, Alvin Earl Poll, of Northumberland Street, Ayr, passed away at his residence on Thursday, October 12th, 2000. He was in his 67th year. Born in Kitchener, he was a son of the late Earl Poll and Maryann Fischer. Alvin spent nearly a half century in the trucking industry and with his family, operated Drumbo Transport. The business started in 1953 from a modest one-truck operation. In 1959 he purchased Drumbo Transport and in 1961 took over McDonald Transport and Hillside Garage on Scott Street, Ayr. The fleet grew again in 1966 with the purchase of the trucks of J. W. Maus and Sons. Outgrowing the Scott Street facilities, the business was moved in 1971 to a modern new terminal on Melair Drive, its present location. He was a member of the Ontario Trucking Association, livestock division. An avid fan and supporter of sports, Alvin was the driving force behind hockey in Ayr for many years. He was a long-time president of the Ayr Rockets intermediate hockey team and a founding member and past president of the current junior team, the Ayr Centennials. He served numerous terms as the village's representative to the Ontario Hockey Association. Beside his parents, he was predeceased by a sister June Poll.
