Death Takes Prominent Member Of Former Stanley Street Church - Was Clerk of the Session

John L. Black, one of the oldest and most prominent citizens of this community, passed quietly away at his home, 9th concession of Blenheim, this (Wednesday) morning, in his 87th year. Mr. Black was born in Ayr, but for the past 80 years had resided on the farm on which he died. This farm is known as the Black homestead, having been settled by his grandfather, James Black, who came from Howick, Scotland.

Mr. Black was a Bible student with a deep knowledge of the scriptures, and for many years he was superintendent of the former Townline Sabbath School. He was also one of the most valued members of the former Stanley Street Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder and acted as clerk of the Session, sang in the choir and worked in the Sabbath School. He was later an elder in Knox United Church.

He was well known as a writer, and composer of poetry, and the articles from his pen which appeared in tho Ayr News from time to time were read with much interest. In addition to his duties on the farm, Mr. Black was also a land surveyor and looked after much of the work in this section.

Mr. Black, who was the last member of his family, was esteemed as a gentleman of the old school, and his many sterling qualities endeared him to all with whom he came in contact He was a good friend and neighbor and was always willing to lend assistance in time of need.

His wife, whose maiden name was Annie Bueglas, predeceased him in 1907. He is survived by the following three sons: Robert, Calgary; Scott, Detroit, and George R., at home. At time of going to press, funeral arrangements had not yet been completed.
