Notes |
- One of Ayr's most popular citizens, Murray E. Smith, passed away at his Piper Street home on Tuesday, November 3rd. He was in his 80th year. Born in England he came to Canada in 1923, and then to Ayr where his first job was on the farm of the late Bill Wallace's father. A talent for woodworking led him to several other jobs in the Ayr community and he also operated his own craft and woodworking shop. Murray loved gardening and in later years operated a lawn mowing service. His work with community organizations was extensive and with many he held office, generally secretary. Among these organizations were: Masonic Lodge No. 172, Dolman Lodge I.O.O.F., Cantons, Rebeccas, H.L.l, Ayr Horticultural Society, Christ Church Board of Management former Warden and member of Synod, long time choir member and Sunday School Superintendent, Ayr town councilor, Scout Master, Ayr Band, Boosters, Chamber of Commerce, Ayr Seniors, Zone 3 Seniors 0.S.C.A., Kirkwood Board of Directors and L.A.C.A.C. Beloved husband of Stella Mitchell (the couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary earlier this year); dear father of Shirley and her husband Bob Watson of Ayr; loved grandfather of Jamie and Duane; dear brother of Edwin of Scarborough, Eric and Syd both of England. Predeceased by twin daughters. Rested at the Wm. Kipp Funeral Home, Paris, where Masonic and I.O.O.F. services were held Thursday evening; then to Christ Anglican Church, Ayr, where funeral service was held on Friday morning. Rev. Roy Shepherd officiated. Interment in Ayr Cemetery. Pallbearers were Howard and Clarence Mitchell, .Jim Pipe, Mel Robb, Rick Read and Carl Epplett.
