- Death of Albert Upton, former Ayr Merchant - One of Ayr's well-known former businessmen, Albert Ernest Upton, passed away at Chedoke Hospital, Hamilton, on Thursday following a lingering illness. He was in his 73rd year. The late Mr. Upton was a native of Rushden, Northamptonshire, England. He came to Canada in 1921 following service with the British Army during World War I. He settled in Ayr, where he was employed for some years in the former Hecker - H-O plant at Greenfield. He had learned the shoemaking trade in England and eventually purchased the shoe store and repair shop on Stanley St. from Ernest Hooton, which he continued to operate until a short time ago. He was a member of the Ayr Legion, and one of its top cribbage players. He was also a former bowler and a member of the Independent Order of Foresters at Brantford. Mr. Upton was an adherent of Christ Anglican Church. Surviving are his wife, Mary Ann Kendall; daughter, Mrs. Arthur (Phyllis) Leiska, both of Ayr; and a son, Ernest of Hamilton. There are seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
- The Funeral -
Funeral service was held Saturday at Christ Church, with Rev. H. F. Bull officiating. Pallbearers were Legion members: Robert Todd, William Underwood, Fred Harrison, William Gladstone, Jack Swan and James Mast. Interment was made in Ayr Cemetery.
