  • Notes
    • Stanley D. Rendall Passes - One of Ontario's outstanding educationists, who was a leader in the streamlining and modernization of the province's secondary school system, Stanley D. Rendall, B.A., LL.D., passed away on Monday in hospital in Toronto. He was born on the 12th concession of Blenheim, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Rendall, well-known district farmers. Following his early education in Plattsville, and Woodstock schools, he entered Queen's University, Kingston. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in classics. Mr. Rendall subsequently became a secondary school teacher and, while teaching at Plattsville Continuation School, became acquainted with Gladys Manson, a Plattsville Public School teacher, who later became his wife. Mr. Rendall later accepted a position with the Ontario Department of Education, and rose rapidly to positions of increasing responsibility. Upon his retirement a few years ago, he was Superintendent of Secondary Education of Ontario. W. T. Laing, who presently holds this position, credited Mr. Rendall with formation of centralized high school districts and establishment of summer courses for secondary school principals. It will be recalled that he was of great assistance some years ago in the formation of the Waterloo - Oxford High School District and the construction of the district high school near Baden. His ability was recognized in 1959 when he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by University of Western Ontario. Shortly after his retirement, Mr. Rendall suffered a severe stroke and was hospitalized for more than two years, until the time of his passing. Surviving, besides his wife, are a son, Jack of Toronto; three sisters, Mrs. L. Milne (Bess) and Miss Annie of Plattsville and Miss Hazel of Toronto, Three grandchildren also survive. Funeral service was held today (Wednesday) from the A. W. Miles Funeral Chapel, Toronto, with interment in Ayr Cemetery.
