- Rev. J. W. Currie Passes - Rev. J. W. Currie, minister emeritus of Knox United Church, Ayr, died Wednesday at Toronto in his 96th year.
Mr. Currie was minister of Knox Church from 1924 to 1943 and continued to reside in the village until May, 1967, when he and Mrs. Currie moved to Willowdale.
Born in Nottawasaga Township in the County of Simcoe in 1873, he was one of four sons of a Scottish family to become Presbyterian ministers.
Following his elementary schooling he was graduated with a Master's degree in Oriental languages from the University of Toronto. After obtaining a degree in theology from Knox College, Toronto, he did further post-graduate study at Union Theological Seminary in New York City.
Mr. Currie was minister of Erskine Presbyterian Church in Blenheim from 1908 to 1917. He served at Tara Presbyterian Church from 1917 until 1924 when he accepted a call to Ayr where he served until his retirement in 1943. During his years at Ayr he was active in Presbytery and conference affairs.
Surviving are his wife, the former Mary Caughell of Willowdale; two sons, Dr. E. A. Currie of Willowdale and Donald H. Currie of Galt, and a sister, Mrs. A. D. (Flora) MacLean of Elora. There are eight grandchildren.
The late Mr. Currie rested at Coutts and Son Funeral Home, Galt until Saturday noon. Funeral service was held at Knox United Church, Ayr, on Saturday at 2 p.m. The service was conducted by Rev. D. E. Willis of Knox Church, assisted by Rev. Fred Rice, of Galt. Pallbearers were Alden M. Cochrane, George Gillespie, Alex Edgar, Dr. G. E. D. Wilson, Robert McRuer and Wallace Dance.
Interment was in Ayr Cemetery. A Masonic service under the auspices of Ayr Lodge No. 172 A.F. and A.M. was held at the funeral home.
