  • Notes
    • Drowned In the Nith - Another tragic is occurrence was added to the list on Sunday when Andrew S. Laidlaw, a son of Mr. Thos. Laidlaw, Galt, was drowned in the river Nith, about three miles from this village. It appears that the young man, who was employed on the farm of Dr. Thompson, near Blair, came over here to visit his brother John, who is in the employ of Mr. J. C. Lockie, Blenheim. During the afternoon the brothers went down to the river near the quarter town line bridge for a swim, and at 3.30 Andrew was drowned. His brother made an heroic effort to save him, and gave up only after being thoroughly exhausted. The alarm was then given and quite a few neighbors gathered. The body lay in nine feet of water and about an hour elapsed before it was recovered, Mr. A. G. Laurie succeeding after several others had failed. Among those who rendered valuable assistance were Messrs. Kenneth McKenzie, A. B. Laurie, R. W. Roberts and John Harvey. The unfortunate young man could swim very well and it is thought he must have been seized with cramps. He was in his 16th year and was well developed, weighing 100 lbs. The funeral took place on Tuesday, interment being made at Ayr.
