Mrs. Andrew Scott Had Spent Over Three-Quarters of a Century in Ayr and Vicinity
To have passed the Octogenarian stage in life is an achievement that falls to the lot of comparatively few people. Mrs. Andrew Scott, who passed away at her home here Saturday, attained the ripe age of 83 years and some months. Upwards of three-quarters of a century was spent in Ayr or its immediate vicinity. The changes taking place in the village in that time are probably more easily imagined than described. From the condition of a wilderness, with a homestead hewn out here and there, and a few settlers trying to eke out a precarious existence, the community, especially the agricultural section, has attained the stature of one of the most prosperous in the country. What applies to the Ayr district in this respect is also applicable to the country at large, and, like many of her contemporaries, Mrs. Scott was ever a deeply interested witness of and participant in the onward march of civilization. Born in Hawick, Scotland, she came to Canada at the early age of almost three years, settling with her parents in Galt. A few years later the family moved to Ayr, where deceased, whose maiden name was Eliza Patterson, was married to the late And. Scott, who predeceased her several years. She was a member of Knox United Church and is survived by the following members of her family: Adam, London; Mrs. Oliver Gray, Sanborn, North Dakota; Robert, William, Chisholm and Jean, Ayr; Thomas, Oldburg, Sask., and Mrs. Sim. Barclay of Toronto. Mr. Wm. Patterson, Ayr, is a brother. The funeral took place on Monday to the Ayr cemetery and was quite largely attended. The services were conducted by Rev. J. J. brown, assisted by Rev. Dr. Thomson. The pallbearers were Robert, William, Chisholm and Adam Scott, Robert Patterson and John C. Kyle.
