Notes |
- Death of August Turnow
Before the advent of the so called Spanish Influenza, the White Plague (tuberculosis) headed the list as the cause of the greatest number of deaths from disease, although in some communities other diseases have predominated. In Ayr, for instance, cancer claimed more victims than any other disease and is still responsible for a share of the deaths. This week we have to announce the demise from this cause of August Turnow, who passed away at the residence of his sister, Mrs. John Pickett, on Friday morning, after a long illness and a most heroic battle against the inevitable Mr. Turnow, who was in his 63rd year, formerly resided in Detroit, but had lived here permanently for upward of a year past. He was a ship carpenter by trade and a good workman. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Walker, of Detroit, and three sisters, Mrs. Pickett and Mrs. P. Maeder, Ayr, and Mrs. Melitzer, Kitchener. The funeral, which was private, took place on Saturday, when interment was made in the Ayr cemetery, the services being conducted by Rev. Mr. Hiscocks.
