- BURIED DEEP IN MALT.
MR. KALBFLEISCH WAS KILLED.
Berlin, Feb. 19.-An accident that wrought death and great destruction to property and embraced many hair breadth escapes happened at the Lion Brewery, Waterloo, this afternoon. The disaster was occasioned by ten thousand bushels of malt crashing through two floors. The malt was stored in a room on the second story where several men were at work. Without a moment's warning a portion of the floor gave way beneath the terrible pressure. As the mighty downpour struck the floor below there was a groaning of the timbers, and it also gave way, precipitating everything into the cellar. When the collapse of the first floor occurred, Wm. Hoffman and Daniel Kalbfleisch were working near at hand. Before they had time to think of escape they were engulfed by the flood of malt, and were carried into the cellar, where the grain was piled up many feet deep. With all possible despatch a rescuing party was organized, and the work of digging for the buried men was commenced. Out of the pile faintly moved a hand, which guided the rescuers, and in a short time Hoffman was extricated alive. The search was continued for some time, and eventually the diggers came upon the lifeless body of Kalbfleisch. Deceased was a married man and leaves a widow and five children. The building in which the malt was stored is an old one, and the timbers had become defective.

________
Fatal Accident at Waterloo
Daniel Kalbfleisch Smothered to Death in Huether's Brewery
Wm Hoffman's Hairbreadth Escape
A fatal catastrophe occurred in Waterloo at 2.30 o'clock this afternoon, whereby Daniel Kalbfleisch, a married man, was smothered to death, and William Hoffman, a fellow workman, narrowly averted the same fate.
The men were working in Chr. Huether's malt room, where 10,00 bushels of malt are stored. A portion of the floor collapsed, and about 3000 bushels of malt fall through the opening, distance of two stories. Hoffman crawled out and escaped with his life, but Kalbfleisch was buried under the avalance and smothered to death. Dr. Bauman and Coroner Webb were called, but life was extinct. No inquest is deemed necessary.
Deceased was about 50 years of age and leaves a wife and five children.
