Notes |
- The first Municipal Council elected in North Dumfries after the division, was composed as follows : Reeve, Dr. Charles McGeorge, ..
Reminiscences of the Early History of Galt and the Settlement of Dumfries in the Province of Ontario, by James Young pg 235
_____________
MCGEORGE, CHARLES was born in Scotland, and came to Ayr about 1841, one of the early settlers. He became involved in municipal politics and for many years represented Ayr in the township council.
On New Years Eve, 1853, a public dinner was held as a testimonial to him marking confidence in him as Township Councillor and Reeve, as well as a token of respect for him in his private capacity. The editorial comment in the Berlin Telegraph describes him as "the noblest work of God - an honest man."
As a supporter of the choice of Berlin as county seat, he was not popular with the Galt papers. It is interesting to note that the only time he is mentioned in the Dumfries Reformer is in connection with the death of his wife in 1861.
He died the next year, on May l6, 1862. He was survived by two sons and four daughters. Although the published death notices gave his age as 50, the census of 1861 recorded it as 44.
The Galt Reporter said of him on May 23rd.:
Enterprising, perservering and clever, the Dr. early won a high position in the Township in which he resided. For years he represented the Ayr Ward in the Township Council, a position for which his shrewd business habits admirably fitted him. In the practice of his profession he obtained a high rank and was looked on as one of the first medical gentleman in the county.
The obituary goes on to say:
He fell, -alas: as too many fall - by the intoxicating cup.
Dr. Alexander D. Campbell, Doctors in Waterloo County 1852-1925, 1986
