  Jos. Erb Dies Of Infirmities Due To Old Age Pioneer Of Preston Dies 12 Dap After Celebrating 91st Birthday; Funeral Thursday Afternoon Infirmities of a ripe old age were responsible for the death at the home of his only daughter early today of Joseph Erb, one of the founders of Preston and a citizen who had spent practically all his life in Waterloo county. He marked his 91st birthday only 12 days ago. Genuine regret was expressed in all circles of the community to day by people who learned of the death of one who had always taken as his motto, "Preston First", the by word in municipal affairs. While he was probably responsible more than any other man for the growth of the town, the late Mr. Erb did not take an active part in muncipal politics. But his word was always respected and had considerable weight. Confined to his bed for some weeks thru illness, the cause of which was mostly old age, death did not come unexpectedly. About a year ago when he was to observe his birthday he suffered influenza from which he recovered. The end came about 5.45 o'clock this morning, members of his family being at the bedside. Coming from a family that had at one time owned almost all of what is now Preston, the late Mr. Erb was a descendant of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Erb and a nephew of the late John Erb, Sr. He was of staunch Pennsylvanian stock. His folks settled here when the hamlet was known as Cambridge. Records indicate that the father and grandfather of the late Mr. Erb came here 124 years ago, from the time or their arrival and until retirement of Joseph Erb, theirs has been a life given to the growth of the town. Many industries, particularly in the mill and distillery line were structures which the Erbs, in the early days, played no little part in founding. Mrs. Calvin C. Green, 517 Duke street, is an only daughter. For some years the late Mr. Erb made his residence with her. There are two granddaughters, Mrs. Albert Ransome of the same address and Mrs. James M. Gilles, Jr., Preston and two great granddaughters, the Misses Marie Ransome, Preston and Dotty Green of London. One grandson, William C. Green of London also survives. The funeral will take place from the home of his daughter, on Thursday afternoon at two o'clock. Services will be conducted by the Rev. R. M. Geiger, pastor of St. Paul's United church, of which the deceased was a devout member. Interment will take place later in the Preston cemetery.
