Tot Killed, Dad Hurt At Freeport Bridge

A 20-month-old Preston child was killed and his father injured last night when a car skidded and crashed through guard rails at the notorious Freeport bridge on No. 8 highway.

Dead is Philip Benn, son of Mr. and Mrs Louis Benn, 268 Guelph St., Preston.

In St. Mary's Hospital in "fair condition" is Mr. Benn. Police said he received face and left leg cuts and shock.

      DRIVING TO GALT

Waterloo Township police said Benn, 26, was driving to Galt to pick up his wife who had been visiting friends there.

Officers said the eastbound car skidded on the icy road, careened to the south shoulder, crashed a guard rail post and slid down a five-foot embankment coming to rest against a tree.

The youngster was taken to hospital by Clare Martin, defence star of the K-W Dutchmen senior. "A" hockey team, who was driving by and saw the mishap. The child was dead on arrival at hospital.

Benn was taken to hospital by ambulance. Damage to the car was about $800, police said. Officers described road conditions as "terrible" at the time of the crash.
