Notes |
- Another of the old settlers was one Mr. Jacob Thoman, a tailor from Switzerland. He built two taverns and for a time did considerable business. The place where his first tavern stood was purchased by George Roos who took it down and erected the present three storey stone tavern. The moral character of Mr. Jacob Thoman, however, had many blemishes. He was despised by almost every body and died a miserable death, after all his property had been squandered.

____________
The Funeral of Mr. George Roos.
The funeral of the late Mr. George Roos which took place yesterday afternoon was one of the largest ever seen in Preston, Rev. R. von Pirch of Berlin officiating. Many people had come from Berlin, Waterloo, Galt, Toronto and other points to pay the last tribute of honor to the deceased. George Roos was born in Dettweiler, Elsass, on the 3rd of May 1818, whence his parents emigrated to Canada in 182S and settled in Preston where deceased had lived ever since. In 1840 he was married to Miss Elizabeth Schmitt who bore him 12 children and after her death he married her widowed sister, Mrs. Salome Mogk.
He commenced life as a poor farmer's boy, afterwards learned the trade of a shoemaker, then went into the hotel business and later on started a brewery. Some eleven years ago he retired from business having amassed quite a large fortune. In Preston he was one of the most popular men and enjoyed the esteem of all who knew him. In his domestic relations he was exceptionally happy and he is sincerely mourned by those who survive him. Besides his widow he leaves his son Charles and four daughters of whom two, Mrs. Charles Clare and Mrs. Schmitt, live in Preston, Mrs. Ritter in Harriston and Mrs. Hinkelman in Toronto. He also leaves three stepchildren, Mrs. John Killer and Mr. Charles Mogk of Waterloo and Mrs. H. Mogk of Freeport, Ill., one brother, three sisters, 22 grandchildren and one adopted daughter. The many members of the Roos family living in this vicinity were all closely related to him. He was hale and hearty until about six months ago, when he commenced to suffer from dropsy to which he finally succumbed, having reached the ripe old age of 75 years, 3 months and 21 days.
