- COCKBURN, ELIZABETH (Nee McKeracher)
At her late residence, lot 17, concession 9, Puslinch, on Monday, June 20, 1932, after a somewhat lingering illness, aged 75 years, 6 months. Wife of John A. Cockburn. Of a strong physical frame in her younger days, she was seldom sick until about two and a half years ago, when she began to decline, since which time she had been in failing health. She was born in Scotland on November 26, 1856, coming to Canada with her parents the late Duncan McKeracher and Elizabeth Souter, when 2 years of age. A short time after their arrival here, the family settled on lot 21, concession 9, Puslinch. On March 16, 1888, she married John Cockburn of the same township and settled on lot 20, concession 9, purchasing lot 17 in 1891, where she has since resided. Although of a quiet and retiring disposition, her home was ever open to a host of friends and neighbours, her hospitality knew no bounds and many a happy day was enjoyed by those employed on the farm or in the farm home, as well as by church organizations and Sunday Schools. On March 16, 1921, Mr. and Mrs. Cockburn celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, when a very large number of friends assembled to convey their congratulations. She was a devoted member of Duff's Presbyterian Church and latterly, of the United Church in Aberfoyle, where she took an active interest in all the work of the congregation, being a life member of the Women's Missionary Society. Surviving are her husband, five sons and one daughter: H. A. of Guelph; J. M. and E. S., at home; W. M. of Carp; A. B. of Barrie; and Mrs. E. H. Taylor of Alberta; also one sister, Mrs. John Douglas of Liberty Corners, NJ. Funeral from the above address on Wed., June 22 at 2 to Crown Cemetery. This funeral was one of the most largely attended which has taken place in Puslinch. The service was in charge of her pastor, Rev. Mann of Aberfoyle United Church, assisted by Rev. John Little of Rockwood, Rev. W. A. Bradley D. D., of Guelph, Rev. P. Mathieson of Morriston, and Rev. H. A. Graham of Guelph, and the choir of the church. Pallbearers were five sons, H. A., J. M., E. S., W. M., A. B., and one nephew, R. D. McKeracher. Floral tributes were from the staff of Barrie Collegiate Institute; Miss Hinds of the Department of Agriculture, Carp, ON; Aberfoyle United Church; the Aberfoyle Baseball Club; the Aberfoyle Progressive Club; the Community Club; the employees of Commercial Bodies of Guelph; the Laura Secord employees of Guelph; the Aberfoyle Farmer's Club; as well as from friends in the locality, Toronto, Hamilton, Preston, Kitchener and Elora.
