Notes |
- Preston Resident, Antonete Marie Sophia "Sophia" Goldsmith was a rarity.
Sophia was a Preston resident working as a dressmaker/milliner from the 1860's to after 1900. Never married she apparently aspired to be more and became a rarity in Canada, she was a FEMALE INVENTOR.
In 1877 Sophia invented an "Invalid chair and Lounge", not only inventing it but patented it as well.
Women didn't do things like that in the 1800's in Canada, especially when they couldn't vote. She paid her $20 to patent which now would be about $4,940 a huge sum for a common person at that time in the 1870's.
She apparently didn't succeed with this invention. Continuing to work as a dressmaker until becoming a lodger in retirement in 1911. Falling on hard times she entered the House of Industry and Refuge in Kitchener in 1917, dying in 1923. She is buried in an unmarked grave in the Preston Cemetery.
