Son Of Preston Pioneers Celebrates 90th Birthday
Preston, Nov. 6 (Special) - Isaac B. Clemens, descendant of South Waterloo pioneers and one of Preston's oldest citizens, yesterday observed his 90th birthday anniversary here. Despite his age, Mr. Clemens is in excellent health. His appearance and mental alertness gives the impression of being much younger. Although afflicted with deafness and cannot readily enter into the conversation, Mr. Clemens is very hospitable and possesses a keen humor which is very entertaining.
A grandson of George Clemens, one of the first settlers in Waterloo County, the birthday celebrant is also the son of Isaac Clemens, the first member for South Waterloo in the Provincial House after Confederation.
Numerous congratulations were received by the popularily known local citizen yesterday, while he also received many gifts to mark the occasion.
Born on his father's farm, over-looking the Speed River valley between Hespeler and Preston, Mr. Clemens resided there until 35 years ago when he moved to Preston where he has since resided. All his life has been spent in South Waterloo, and he has a very large circle of friends,
Mr. Clemens possesses a keen memory and recalls his youth when he worked in the fields with his father from early morning until sundown, riding on the horses' backs while harrowing. He also recalls that his father and other farmers of the district used teams of oxen in those days for the heavy work.
A keen horse fancier in his earlier years Mr. Clemens still has ribbons he won with some of his best steeds exhibited at the Canadian shows held in Guelph and the South Waterloo fairs.
Gardening is his principal interest to-day. This summer he maintained an excellent garden, working it entirely himself. He favors the gladioli and has won distinction for his blooms which, until the past few years, he has exhibited with much success at Preston Horticultural Society and at the Guelph Flower Show. His best season at the Guelph Exhibition was when, out of 16 entries, he won nine firsts and three seconds.
An excerpt from the history of Preston, written by Otto Klotz, in the year 1886, says: "It took George Clemens (grandfather of the birthday celebrant) with his four-horse team, three weeks to travel from what is now known as the town of Dundas to what is now Preston: in order to get through that dreadful Beverly swamp they had frequently to take their wagon to pieces and their luggage for long distances upon their backs, till they landed on some dry ground."
Mr. Clemens' wife died 25 years ago. He resides with his daughter, Miss Nellie Clémens, in Preston. One daughter lives in Windsor, and two daughters, Mary and Ethel, live in Kitchener. Elton L. Holm, his only son, lives in Toronto.
