- SHANTZ, Margaret Estella (nee Irvine)
March 29, 1914 - December 9, 2014 It is with loving memories but sad hearts that we announce the passing of their mother, grandmother and great grandmother Stella Shantz in her 101st year. Stella was predeceased by her husband Robin Shantz who died in 1989 and her parents Enid (Macgregor) and Oliver Irvine. She was the last generation in both the Shantz and Irvine families. Predeceased by her brothers Harold (RCAF WW11 Burma), Donald, Archibald, Douglas and his sister Alice (White) and Clara (Francis). Stella is survived by her three sons Richard (Janet), Ronald (Diane), Malcolm (Janine), 8 grandchildren Robin (Kit Yee Lau), Mark, Gregory (Candice), Geoffery (Kellie), Jennifer (Kevin), Andrew (Alyssa), Sharon (Brandon), Andrea (Dennis) and 8 great grandchildren Finton, Monica, Taylor, Jordan, Ryan, Benjamin, Reese, Emily as well as many nieces and nephews. Stella was born and raised on the Irvine Family farm at Hainsville, went to normal school (Teachers College) in Ottawa. Upon graduation she taught school in a number of rural schools for 7 years. Stella moved to Peterborough during the war and worked at the GE plant as a weapons inspector in the British and Canadian government. While in Peterborough she met the love of her life and married Robin who was in the RCAF and they lived in PEI until they moved to Preston (now Cambridge) after the war where Stella lived for over 60 years until she had a stroke and then moved to Extendicare Rouge Valley in Scarborough to be close to her son. Stella was active in many community organizations and causes over the years, having served as President of the Grandview Home and School Association; President of the Kinette Club of Preston 1955-56; Secretary of the Preston chapter of the I.O.D.E.; Chaired the March of Dimes campaign; President of St. Pauls United Church Women. Stella could never say no and canvassed in her neighborhood for many charities until she was 90. When all of her sons had left her family home she worked for 9 years at the local library. Stella was an avid bridge player and enjoyed playing scrabble with her friends. (It should be noted that a dictionary was on the table at all times.) She enjoyed many afternoons at the Seniors Centre in Preston (Cambridge). Family will receive friends at the Barthel Funeral Home , 566 Queenston Rd., Cambridge, N3H 3J8, (519) 653-3251 on Friday, December 12, 2014 from 7- 9 p.m. A private family funeral will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at 2 p.m. Private interment at Parklawn Cemetery Cambridge. In lieu of flowers donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice would be appreciated. Stella will be missed by her family and friends.
