    • BEESE, WILLIAM ERNST

      Rev. Beese, PH. B. , BD, was born January 21, 1872, in Carrick Township, Bruce County, ON and died Tuesday, June 11, 1957 at Morriston, after a lengthy illness, in his 86th year. Rev. Beese was prominently identified with the Canadian Council of Churches during his ministerial career. He was licensed to preach by the Canada Conference in April 1955 at South Cayuga. He was ordained deacon at Tavistock in 1899 and received his elder's ordination in 1901. He took a three year course at North Central College and Seminary in Naperville, Illinois and also took some seminary work under Professor S. L. Umbach. Later, he took several correspondence courses. His first appointment was as assistant pastor at the Chesley mission in 1897. Then, he served a year at Rockingham. In 1899, he was sent as the first missionary of the Evangelical Church to the Canadian northwest. He was stationed at Winnipeg but he also preached at Neudorf, Rosthern and other points. After five years in the west, due to ill health, he returned east. He then served the following fields: Morriston, Toronto, Hespeler, Sebringville, Pelham, Hamilton, Tavistock and then, Hamilton again. He served fifty-one years in the active ministry. For thirteen years, he was Superintendent of the Hamilton and Hamilton-Ottawa Conference. In 1934, he was elected president of the Hamilton Ministerial Association and in 1946 was elected First Vice-President of the Canadian Council of Churches. He retired from active service in 1948 and has since lived in Morriston. On June 14, 1899, he married Barbara Miller of Milverton. To this union, were born two sons and two daughters. One daughter, Lorinda Elizabeth, died in Winnipeg. Mrs. Beese died August 9, 1955. He is survived by two sons, Carl W. of Morriston; Willis E. of Niagara Falls; one daughter, Fern E. (Mrs. Rev. C. B. Heckendorn) of Chesley; two brothers, E. E. Beese of Winnipeg; Edgar A. Beese of Waterloo; one sister, Mrs. S. H. Holtzman of Hamilton; and four grandchildren. In 1946, he retired at Morriston, where he resided until his death. McLanaghan-Wall Funeral Home. A memorial service was held at the Morriston Evangelical United Brethren Church at 2: 30 on Thursday. Rev. A. S. Caughell, pastor of the Morriston Church presided. Rev. E. Pletch offered the prayer and Rev. E. F. Dorsch preached. Interment Mount Hope Cemetery, Kitchener. Rev. G. F. Barthel presided. Pallbearers were: Rev. Earl E. Pletch, Rev. George Sim, Rev. Mervyn E. Reuber, Rev. John V. Dahms, Rev. John Huether and Rev. J. Henry Goetz
