      PNEUMONIA FATAL TO MENNO DEVITT

      Veteran Waterloo Merchant Passes In 82nd Year ; In Business 40 Years

      Menno Devitt, who for 40 years was a merchant in Waterloo and spent all but two years of his life here, died at his home, 2 Bellevue avenue last night about 8 o'clock. Mr. Devitt was in his 82 year. About seven years ago he suffered a stroke and since that time had been confined to his home, periodically. Death was caused by pneumonia. Born in Waterloo, Oct. 6, 1850, he was the youngest son of the late Barnabas Devitt and Magdalene Shoemaker. Mr. Devitt concluded his 40 years in business here about four years ago. He was also prominent in municipal affairs, during his earlier years. Predeceased by his wife one year ago last November, he is survived by four daughters, Essie, at home, Bertha of Boston, Mass., Hilda at home, Mrs. R. H. Wing, Waterloo, two sons, Stanley and LeRoy Devitt of Waterloo and two grandchildren. Tbe funeral will he held from his late residence, 2 Bellevue avenue, tomorrow at 3 o' clock, interment will be made at Mount Hope cemetery.

      MENNO DEVITT PASSES AWAY IN HIS 82nd YEAR

      For Forty Years He Conducted a Dry Goods Business in Waterloo. Widely Known.

      One of Waterloo's best known citizens, in the person of Mr. Menno Devitt, 2 Bellevue Avenue, slept peacefully away Thursday evening in his 82nd year. Seven years ago he suffered a stroke since which time he has gradually failed. Pneumonia was the immediate cause of death.

      The late Menno Devitt for forty years conducted a successful retail dry goods business, retiring in 1926. He formerly owned the Devitt block which was bought by the Ontario Equitable Life about 1923.

      The late Mr. Devitt was born in Waterloo, October 6th, 1850, the youngest son of Barnabas Devitt and Magdalene Shoemaker. He married Miss Sauder, who predeceased him in November 1930. There survive, four daughters and two sons, namely, Essie, Hilda and Mrs. R. H. Wing, Waterloo, Bertha of Boston, Mass., Stanley and LeRoy of Waterloo, also two grandchildren.

      A simple and impressive funeral service was conducted at the home on Saturday afternoon by Rev. Finlay Matheson, pastor of the First United Church. Interment was made in Mount Hope cemetery.

      The drawing room and casket at the home were banked with beautiful flowers sent by friends.

      The bearers were, M. S. Hallman, Allen Shants, R. S. Bean, Fred Snider, C. C. Parsons, H. G. Mistele.
