- EDWARD J. MERKEL
PRESTON. Jan. 23--Illness of a months duration culminated in the death yesterday of Edward John Merkel, 72, husband of Elisabeth Illing. Born in Preston, the late Mr. Merkel, with the exception of 12 years, lived all his life here and was one of the town's better known citizens. Originally employed with the Guggisburg Furniture, the deceased was later connected with the Canadian Office and School Furniture Company. In 1890 he moved to New Hamburg where he remained for 11 years before going to Wiarton. Remaining at the latter place for a year and a half he returned to Preston. In 1902, being employed with the Canadian Office and School Furniture since that time. A member of St. Peter's Lutheran church the deceased was church councillor and treasurer of the church for a number of years and was also a member of Preston Lodge A F and A M and of the Canadian Order of Foresters. Keenly interested in baseball he was a regular attendant at local games. He was also interested in hockey. Surviving are his wife, one son. three brothers, Henry of Preston, William of Kitchener and Charles of London. The remains are at his home, 740 Hamilton street, Preston, from where the funeral will be held on Wednesday at 2.30 pm. Interment will be made in the Preston Cemetery.
