  • Notes
    • Death of Ferdinand Walter

The death took place at Kitchener last Friday evening of one of Waterloo County's oldest residents, Ferdinand Walter, after an illness of about two weeks. Deceased was in his 91st year. The late Mr. Walter was born in Seekat, Baden, Germany, on March 18th, 1830. He emigrated to America in the year 1849 and settled on a farm near Bamberg. He also conducted a general store at Bamberg. He took a keen interest in municipal and political affairs and was a member of the Wellesley Township Council for forty-two years and a member of the County Council for forty years, during which time he was thrice Warden of the County. In politics he was a strong conservative and in 1873 contested the riding of North Waterloo for the Dominion House but was unsuccessful. He removed to Kitchener sixteen years ago and in 1905 was appointed license inspector, which office he held until 1916, after which he retired. He was married in 1856 to Agatha Dietrich, who passed away about seven years ago. He is survived by two sons and four daughters, namely, John Walter, New Westminster, B. C., Robert of Toronto, Mrs. John Gies, Heidelberg, Mrs. Anthony Starr, Bamberg, Mrs. Jacob Martini, Toronto, and Mrs. Rose Hummel, of Kitchener. The funeral took place on Monday forenoon to the R. C. Cemetery at St. Agatha and was largely attended. High Mass was conducted by Rev. Fathers, Fehrenbach. Schweitzcr, Spetz and Wey.

      St. Agatha Church

To the side altars a high altar was soon added. Antony Kaiser II., and Lucas Dorschel made all the altars, and Mr. Ferdinand Walter and his brother painted and decorated them in 1851 quite artistically. Mr. Walter still expresses his admiration for the Fathers whose life and works he could watch closely while lodging with them when finishing the altars. He had grown up during the turbulent years of the 40 's in Baden and was to some extent imbued with the anti-Catholic and free notions of his time. He had never before seen a live Jesuit, Avho was the most hated and reviled being at that time. On acquaintance with them he found that they were pious to a degree, learned, immensely laborious and extremely kind.

At Bamberg, about five miles north of St. Agatha, there were also quite a number of early Catholics, the most prominent being Mr. Ferdinand Walter, the present License Inspector.
