A fireman with the Kitchener fire department for many years, Thomas William Shilling, 62, of 115 Cameron St. N., died of a heart attack, Saturday, after rushing to fight a neighbor's fire. Mr. Shilling, who retired two years age with the rank of Captain, was working in his garden when he was called to assist a neighbor. "He was a good fireman right to the last," said Deputy Chief Bernard Finney of the Kitchener fire department. During his years with the fire department he had some close calls, like most of the firemen do from time to time. Mr. Shilling was born in London, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Shilling and came to Kitchener in 1912. Reserved overseas in the First World War with the 10th Battalion railway troops after enlisting at the age of 14. Since his retirement from the fire department, Mr. Shilling had worked as a security guard with Marsland Engineering Limited. He was a member of Holy Saviour Anglican Church, the Twin City Masonic Lodge, the Waterloo chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Canadian Legion. Surviving are his wife, the former Lena Degen; three sons, William W., of Kitchener and Robert and John E., of Waterloo, a daughter, Mrs. Jacob(Lillian) Heer of Breslau, two bothers, Percy and Horace of Kitchener and eightgrandchildren. The body is at the Schreiter-Sandrock Funeral Home, where a service will be conducted at 3: 30 p.m., Wednesday, by Rev. Denton Massey. There will be a Masonic service at the Funeral Home, Tuesday, at 8 p.m. and an Order of the Eastern Star Service half an hour later. Burial will be in Memory Gardens.
