    • METTLER, JOHN Card in Deutsche Canadier June 21, 1851:

I take the liberty to respectfully announce to the inhabitants of Preston, Berlin and the neighborhood that I have taken up permanent residence in Preston in the above condition.

Educated as physician at the University of Switzerland and since then more than fifteen years practice in all branches of Therapeutics. I hold myself to be proficient, and commend myself to the public to be permitted to call on cases of sickness.

My residence is in the house next to the Evangelical Lutheran Church.

This card appeared from June 20 to November 7, 1851.

The 1851 census says: born Switzerland, wife Magdalena, possibly 8 children. Nothing further known.

Dr. Alexander D. Campbell, Doctors in Waterloo County 1852-1925, 1986

      ____________

"Dr. John Mettler came from Blumenstein, Switzerland, in the Canton of Berne, with his family in 1853. They left Switzerland, went to Le Havre, France, sailed for New York in a three masted ship. They were several weeks on the ocean. My mother, Catherine Mettler Stoecker, told us an infant sister died at sea. Grandmother didn't want her cast into the sea so pretended to nurse her, mimicking her cry. I don't know if she succeeded in this or not.

They first went to Preston, Canada West. Grandfather(Dr. John Mettler) had been born and reared in the republic of Switzerland so after a time he decided to come to the United States because he resented being under the rule of England.

They moved to New Philadelphia in Tuscarawas County, Ohio and later they came to Cottage Hill, Iowa, where grandfather Mettler died and is buried. Grandmother lived with her children in her later years. She spent many years in my home. We all loved her. Here she died November 5, 1892, after one week's illness at the age of 79 years. She is buried in city cemetery Guttenberg, Iowa."
